Dan's right in that YMMV with online job posting boards. A lot has to do with the job description and since I wasn't an employee at the time they posted the ad, I'm not sure how it was written, or if they even said "local candidates only." It was a pretty small company just learning how to use the Internet for something other than posting their user guides. When I arrived, their corporate web site was six years old (and looked it). They were a lot more savvy by the time I moved on.
When I ran a computer store in Alaska and we used Monster to post an employment ad, we had several thousand responses, mostly from people wanting to move to Alaska. A few fit the job skills we needed, but none of them wanted to move north on their own nickel. I wrote the ad and neglected to say "local candidates preferred," and "no moving expenses offered."
