I just did a quick calculation in Excel to recoup $18,000 from buying a hybrid
that gets 52mpg instead of a regular car that gets 28. You would have to drive
397,090.91 miles at $2.75 per gallon, from truck that gets 14mpg that is still
200,000 miles. If you are looking to go from a gas car to a hybrid I would say
certainly not worth it. It 56727 miles just to recoup $3,000

I don't know I guess you can see my stance on hybrids... Not to mention repair
costs of a hybrid.

I'm curious if you ever found your breakeven point if you bought about a $6000
used car. My wife has a ford escort that gets 32ish in town(about 40 on
freeways). A new escort is going to be at least 4 times that much. So my
question is how many miles does it take to recoup that extra cost? I have
never seen numbers to justify the cost of a prius or any other hybrid for that
matter.

Just curious if you ever figured out the numbers. And maybe discussion sake I
guess.

I'll vouch for the Prius -- bought mine and now that I am driving to
Bloomington I am sitting at 50+ MPG average...
