Throwing in my 2 cents - I had a Chevy Monte Carlo coupe for years (actually, I had 2 of them, I like the car so much) that got 25-32 mpg, and I drove the heck out of both of them back & forth from Decatur to DW. I finally decided I was getting too old for the whole hauling my "stuff" in and out of the back seat. When I started looking, I looked at several models of vehicle that got gas mileage in that same range or a little better. What I ended up with was a Dodge Dakota quad cab truck - not a full-size truck, but just the right size for me (which means I can park it without taking up 2 spaces). It gets anywhere from 14 to 21 mpg - much less than what the Monte Carlo got, but I'm also driving less now that it's only 3 miles to work instead of 30. It's a flex fuel vehicle, and the flex fuel mileage is a little less (1/2 to 1 mpg less) than gasoline, but it does give me an option to use E85 when the gasoline prices skyrocket. It gives me the option to haul 4 people comfortably , 5 people a little uncomfortably without having to cram them in through 2 doors, and I have a locking bed cover that unfolds to allow for full bed use, which has been VERY handy. It's also has 4 wheel drive - handy when we have snow and I need to get out of the 1/4 mile driveway (we're in the country and sometimes don't get plowed out quickly - or they plow our driveway shut.) I absolutely love this truck and can't imagine going back to a smaller vehicle. When I have to drive my husband's Mustang, I feel claustrophobic - although he loves the Mustang, so I guess it really is about personal preference.

You would have to drive 397,090.91 miles at $2.75 per gallon, from truck that gets 14mpg that is still 200,000 miles. If you are looking to go from a gas car to a hybrid I would say certainly not worth it. It 56727 miles just to recoup $3,000 I don't know I guess you can see my stance on hybrids... Not to mention repair costs of a hybrid. My wife has a ford escort that gets 32ish in town(about 40 on freeways). A new escort is going to be at least 4 times that much. So my question is how many miles does it take to recoup that extra cost? I have never seen numbers to justify the cost of a prius or any other hybrid for that matter. Just curious if you ever figured out the numbers. And maybe discussion sake I guess.
