Luke, i have not read Heir for 10+ years but i am not sure what you mean by "Zahn is really impressed with his own creations"...
I am partially 'stuck' in time for the Heir to the Empire books, these were the ONLY new Star Wars meterial in over 10 years when they were published so i give them a lot of reverence, but reading them now may be a totally different experience.
