I have to agree with Raven here...mostly. Comics don't sell movies, but can a movie sell comics? I am going to make a shot in the dark and say yes. Especially in the case of Iron Man. Iron Man comics were never that well thought of (Sorry Van). I used to read it but he was never even close to the top of the comics 'favorite' list. I would say he can be a favorite Avenger but not an overall superhero/comic favorite...until the movie came out. Now every kid knows who Iron Man is. I don't care to research it but i would be willing to bet U S Currency on the fact that after the first iron Man movie the comics got a bump in sales. With regard to Shag suggesting that the Civil War run was a build up for comic readers to get excited about Iron Man...don't buy it. Civil War was just the Secret Wars or Secret Wars II or Inferno or Age of Apocalypse for that summer. Did Marvel think..."Hey we have an Iron Man movie coming out soon, let's make sure to feature Iron Man/Tony Stark in Civil War to get a little pub" sure, but that was more of an afterthought. Make the leader of that side of the Civil War story line Reed Richards (If they dared make another FF movie) or Hank Pym just as easily.
Bottom line, if you make the movie a compelling fun story, you can probably revive a hero...even Hawkman (potentially).
