Thanks Aryeh, not sure if I replied to this one but the machine
started refusing to boot again. Lenovo support thought a system board
and sent someone out. They couldn't reproduce the problem but replaced
the board anyway (possible unadvertised benefit of onsite service? :).
Since then the machine hasn't complained, though I took the
opportunity to replace with an SSD anyway (something I'd thought of
doing in winter but didn't do).

Thanks for the steps for the hibernation file. I will file this away
in case it happens again.
