I think we have two major faults here: 1. Restraining community from contributing 2. Focusing on development instead of use.
Let me be more specific; 1. I understand that it is a lot of job just to see what is done and not to mention checking the quality of contributions before it is ready for publishing. It is obvious that job soon overhelmes everybody and only defense is restraining. BUT, there is no excuse for not including community in this process. Here are some highly skilled guys (guys includes girls) who can do the first check and prefilter contibutions for Tiny's crew. So, if we have community project leaders handling lower level and early stage solutions in the community; and Tiny crew members leading projects in a house, checking and polishing prepared solutions... 2. All of this work is meanless if there are no users. Since I have bumped to OE, I am still attempting to load some data into it. Stupid problems (i.e. True boolean value has to be True; not t, T, TRUE or true - ok, if this has to be like this, let it be, but WRITE somewhere how to declare it. VAT number seems to be incorrect because something somewhere set vat's size to zero!...) make me thing of searching another solution for my company. If I cannot try the product, or if it fails to fulfill my needs, I will not buy it, I am sure. Especially if I assume that somebody is making me fool and convincing me that I am too stupid to use it without help from consultants. So, please, do think about new users who are willing to pay for development of new modules, to broad voice about OE, to contribute in translation (ok, not in this way as it has to be done now - several times repeating the same translation, in each module it uses the same msg) and to be sponsor of the project for, let's say 500-1000 e/year. Try to do some math and see the results. There is a problem with open source project transforming to bussines in taking money for something and not to make the client feel rubbed. So, you have two ways here, first, explain to him that he cannot do what he is up to without help, or second, make him feel good and wait for your reward. Or, combine these two approaches. Why not selling .pdf manuals for 2 euro? Make it good and everybody will pay. Remember Stephen King's first downloadable book? Also, if instalation costs OPTIONAL 10 euro per moodule, who will not pay for it? But before that, user (not average one, but one willing and capable to read and learn) has to be able to do what he need to do (at least at basic level) using only manuals. Intended audience for OE is small and medium company, not only in Germany or Italy, but also in Honduras, Botswana and China. Think a bit of this too, please. All of this was in best intention and with expanding the community and making all of our lifes easier in mind.
