Louis, I'm not sure about history and Valdosta State but in psychology and Oswego State there are consequences for missing deadlines for faculty. A late grant proposal is not accepted, getting promotion material in late means no promotion. If you turn in reviews late then you are not asked to review articles again. And, outside of academia there are no excuses for late assignments. Yes, like students, we may make excuses for being late but it does not change the fact that we have to accept the consequences of being late.

If students leave things to the last minute, it is on their shoulders that the minute has run out. On the other hand, how many times have we scholars missed our assigned deadlines for reviews, proposals, rewrites with a host of explanations, rationales, and excuses offer to ourselves and others. Just an annoying thought.
