Gary, I am not arguing the point of consequences. Whenever a student
comes at with, in this case, a late excuse, explanation, or whatever, and
asks if it will impact upon them, I always merely say, "There are always
consequences." However, it is never cut-and-dry in any profession or at
any institution as you make it seem. In my 35 years, I have never met or
heard of a deadline that can't be slightly "bent" or "tweaked" with a
phone call, now an e-mail, accomplanied by a "legitimate" explanation,
especially a publishing or conference proposal deadline. A lot of times,
it is who you are that influences the response, even with the hardnosed
NEH. And, so, we have to be careful and be real, be sure that we don't
model as "do as I say and not as I do," imposing upon students intractable
demands what we don't impose upon ourselves.

Make it a good day.
