I also adhere to pretty strict deadlines. I usually tell my students that assignments are due by a particular time on a particular date. Anything that is submitted after that time is considered late. I do let students submit late work, but will deduct anywhere from 20% to 25% (depending on the class and the assignment) from the total points depending on how late it is submitted.
For the most part, students have accepted this. I had one student who came to me last semester and told me that she thought my policy was unfair. She had missed class on a Tuesday that we had given an exam and an assignment was due and had not contacted me prior to her absence. She also missed the subsequent class session on Thursday. She came to see me on Friday afternoon to submit her assignment and reschedule the exam she missed. After talking with her about her absence (she had gone to Walmart a hour before the class on Tuesday and her car had broken down in the Walmart parking lot), I told her that she would not be able to take the exam and that I would accept her assignment but with a substantial deduction of points because it was 3 days late. She told me this was unfair and I remember her quote, "It's not like when I get a job they are going to deduct points if I'm late." I told her that she was correct. They wouldn't deduct points, but they might fire her, or not promote her, or penalize her in some other way. She didn't believe me. Two days later she dropped the class. A late grant proposal is not accepted, getting promotion material in late means no promotion. If you turn in reviews late then you are not asked to review articles again. And, outside of academia there are no excuses for late assignments. Yes, like students, we may make excuses for being late but it does not change the fact that we have to accept the consequences of being late. Gary J. Klatsky, Ph. D. If students leave things to the last minute, it is on their shoulders that the minute has run out. On the other hand, how many times have we scholars missed our assigned deadlines for reviews, proposals, rewrites with a host of explanations, rationales, and excuses offer to ourselves and others. Just an annoying thought.
