Hi Tim,

I also try to push for more online access. And to be honest, we are doing quite well. We are part of consortiums who buy group access to certain packages, which keeps the costs down and gives us broad access.

This being said, my are of specialty is counselling psych (I am the only psych instructor here. We are a very small College, with only 6-7 psych courses, first and second year level). But at the undergrad level, I was really pushed towards research, which I really appreciated. I find we should teach the research model first, and then move on to more clinical stuff.

The reason why I insist on keeping a few "non-virtual" publications in-library is because I want students to be able to browse through them. There is so much virtual stuff, I think it is important to have access to concrete, hands-on materials.

So I'm simply curious to hear about what others believe to be "priceless" publications. From there I'll decide if I should chage what we have or not...

And, let's admit it: Top 5's are always a fun thing to do!

Cheers all!

JM

I don't mean to throw a fly into this ointment but I think which five
journals your library should carry would depend on other factors like
the areas of training of the faculty, the courses you teach, and the
like. Personally I keep pushing for more online text access on our
campus. I know it isn't the only solution but when funds are so limited
I can't seem to convince myself otherwise. Tim

Subject: Top 5 Psych Journals

Greetings all,
The College where I teach has a very small library. We only carry 6 psych journals, and we are in the process of re-evaluating whether we want to modify our subscriptions.

Here are the journals we have:

1. Canadian Journal of Counselling
2. Canadian Psychology
3. Current Psychology
4. Environment and Behaviour
5. Monitor on Psychology
6. Psychological Bulletin

We also carry Psychology today as a magazine, although I often wonder if

this is not a hinderance to student's ability to discriminate between good publications, and "popular" ones... Do you know of any quality psych-related magazines?

My question is as follow: What would be your top 5 journals that are accessible to first and second year-level psych students? I'd like to compile this and compare with what we carry here (I will also take into consideration what we can access as Full-text online).

Thanks in advance!

JM
