Paul and Tipsters- Though I suspect that your assertion that "pride" or advertising advantages are reasons in the matrix of "logic" to increase technology, I am also aware that there were legal concerns on our campus when we started "requiring" students own or have access to a computer. Specifically, the college lawyers pointed out that by requiring (or even providing) universal access to computers we were making certain implied assertions about their use. Thus, sad to say, at least SOME of the motivation for administrations pushing teachers to include technology is that old nemesis to good practice- the law-suit. There was a statement, which I have not as yet seen backed up by fact, btw, that lawsuits had been brought and won against colleges that had lap-top initiatives for all their students but showed little or no real use of them in their programs. Of course, it is possible this was just a smoke screen itself to allow for the increased advertising presence of "technology on our campus". :) If any of you are on campuses who have been sued on such grounds, could you share that with the list. I'm on several committees that are reviewing our practices and handbook/catalog information and I could use such information. Thanks. Tim Shearon

Personally, I think that if material is important it should be made available to the student before the class _before_ the class so that they can concentrate on what I'm saying, not on copying a diagram from the chalkboard or screen. I will admit that laptops can be nice. In a cold climate they can keep your lap warm in the winter.
