Once upon a time Ron Koms shaped the electrons to say...

Could be.

Perhaps, no, and yes. :-)

300 hours is the capacity as *Basic*. In my experience a digital SD
program will use

For example, I have a one hour analog SD program off NGC recorded at
High on my S3 and it says it uses 2.53GB. I also have a one hour
digital SD program off SCIENCE on my S3 and it says it uses 1.26GB.
You won't get 300 hours that way, but it'll be closer to the capacity
at Medium.

Roughly half the space - but the digital SD program is of much higher
quality, higher even than if I'd used Best on the analog program.

Why? The digital programs are encoded using expensive commercial
multi-pass encoders that can produce a higher compression for a given
quality than the consumer single-pass encoder in the TiVo. Consumer
DVRs don't really have a choice but to use single-pass encoders
becuase they need to encode the video in real time, as it is
received. Commercial encoders can make multiple passes over the video
to analyze it and optimize the encoder for each video - or even
subsections of the video, getting the best encoding possible

The digital SD channels are still just 480i like analog channels, just
pre-encoded.
