Several guys on the group here have attempted to just 'make it work' using only the side cable and had no success without modifying the Nuvi or the cable. When the Nuvi goes into FMI mode, it requires that it receive power via the cradle jack. The Nuvi firmware was written so that if it senses an FMI cable, then it assumes it must power the FMI cable, therefore it cannot expect to power itself through the same port. Believe me, if it were as simple as you think it is, we wouldn't have worked on it all this time and still had to take time to figure out modifications. The easiest solution is to buy the FMI cable to connect to the Nuvi's side port and power it thru the cradle, like it was designed. Otherwise, after you 'just figure it', you will find in fact that when in FMI mode, you won't be able to get around the Nuvi griping about power via the cradle without modifying the Nuvi itself or the FMI cable. 73, Randy WF5X
