It may seem like the power connections are the same but they are not. The power 
connector on the back is strickly a power connector. The mini-b connector on 
the side can be switched internally for supplying power or for charging. Garmin 
uses the ID pin to "sense" what is connected to the side port. Each of Garmins 
chargers has a different value on the ID pin. The AC charger has 15k ohms 
between ground and the ID pin and 15K between power and the ID pin. The FMI 
cable has 8.2K between the ID pin and ground. In this case, the unit knows it 
must supply power to the cable and does an internal configuration where it 
makes sure power is connected on the back. Hence the message a device requires 
power.

You should be able to find a replacement cradle. Garmin still refurbishes the 
350's and would have parts available. They have shown up on eBay also.
