I like the suggestion of adding an intermediate language to the PO format.
In the meantime, for people who need to translate via an intermediate language, they can use my script, instrans.php. It inserts the translation from a 3rd PO file into the comment field. In addition, it has options for automatically inserting translations for languages which borrow extensively from other languages. It also has an option to insert bilingual translations and to insert translations into the status bar. You can download it at: http://www.runasimipi.org/instrans.zip Documentation is at: http://www.runasimipi.org/blanco-en.php?file=instrans or http://www.runasimipi.org/readme-en.html We are using this tool to translate English->Spanish->Quechua Since most Quechua speakers don't read English, they need to translate from the Spanish. Since most computer terms are borrowed directly from the Spanish, they just leave those terms blank and use instrans.php to insert the spanish translation. I've only tested instrans.php with AbiWord, so please send me feedback on how it works with other programs.
