Anytime people have put their trust in a man (or woman), and what he says, rather than Jesus and what He said, a heretical religion has been formed. Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (aka Jehovah's Witnesses)[William Taze Russell], LDS [Joseph Smith], Catholic Church [Popes], 7th Day Adventists [Miller and White], Christian Science [Mary Baker Eddy], Branch Davidians [Vernon Howell, aka David Koresh], World Wide Church of God [Herbert W. Armstrong], Church Universal and Triumphant [Elizabeth Claire Prophet], Heaven's Gate [Marshall Applewhite], on and on. Jesus is the head of the church, and to place one's faith in anyone else leads to apostasy.

Armstrong certainly could have been influenced by the BoM, but my guess is that he developed his own theology and that any similarity with the LDS is coincidental. If you are trying to use one cult's beliefs to verify another's beliefs, good luck.

You are probably aware of this, but the Worldwide Church of God renounced Armstrongism and returned to evangelicalism under Joseph Tkach. See http://www.wcg.org/lit/AboutUs/history.htm for the history of this church.

DAVEH: Glenn, this is just an observation: Do you find it as
interesting as I do that this guy interpreted the Bible (I assume he has
not reverted to extra Biblical or latter-day revelations) in a way that
has some similarities to LDS theology. I think you've commented in
past times that reading the Bible only does not make a Mormon. That may
be, but this guy sure seems to have read the Bible and understood it in
a way that has some Mormon theology flavor to it. At least that's the
way I see it.

If I ever get any extra time, I'd like to see why he thinks "The
Trinity doctrine is pagan.".
