So, Glenn, is this a useful distinction (i think it's true, acc to the post, below): Although Mormons constantly seek Christian status, and, even though, acc to DaveH, Mormons are sanctioned 'Christian' by DavidM, it remains a fact that Mormons are not/can not be Protestant/s--
DAVEH: Whew.......Awhile ago, it seems like several TTers were trying to force us into that mold! We simply feel a part of Christianity because we are believers in and followers of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now a question arises--do (or why don't) Mormons wanna be considered Protestant?
DAVEH: No, we have no aspirations to be thought of as 'Protestant'. Just the nature of 'Protestant' implies breaking off from Catholocism, LDS theology considers itself a Restored (as opposed to Protesting) Church.
The argument with them here, on _TT_ is based on the case the Reformation/Protestant Christianity is the only Godly religion--no?DAVEH: I don't quite follow your question, g, so don't know how to answer. However, let me respond with my perspective of Christianity over the past couple thousand years. Catholocism (RCC or GO) contends they descended from the time of Christ with priesthood authority as purportedly given by our Lord to Peter. 15 centuries later, the Protestants apparently denied they (Catholocism) had any inherited authority and broke away from the RCC by taking the authority upon themselves by assuming reading the Bible and simply believing in Jesus gave them the authority to act in the Lords name. This is reffered to as a believers' authority.
As I see it, IF the RCC really had a priesthood authority, splitting off from the RCC would create a big problem for Protestantism. However, if the RCC did not have the proper authority, then the roots from which Protestantism descended were dead to start with.
Furthermore, Catholocism claims to be the 'true church', whereas Protestantism apparently claims none of its denominations constitute the 'true church'. I suppose one could question whether or not the RCC folks are the 'true church'. But I don't see anybody arguing against the Protestant position. gary ottoson * aa1ozg.com
