Blaine:  What I hear Judy saying is that only those who believe
the Bible is the word of God are Christians, and if you believe there
are other scriptures, you are not Christian?  Is this correct, Judy?
Correct me if I am wrong.

Judy:
This is what the scriptures teach Blaine. In the early Church if one
came who didn't have the "doctrine of Christ" they were rejected as
a 'false teacher' and the saints were told not to invite them into their
homes or to even wish them godspeed. (2 John 10); now understand
that this is the faith ONCE delivered to the Saints (June 3) and not a
new thing or a recent 'spiritual' revelation.

Blaine:
And what I hear Laura saying is that believing in Jesus Christ and
seeking discipleship with him makes one a Christian. So, by Judy's
definition, we Mormons are not Christians because we believe God
can speak to us now as he did in olden times--yet by Laura's
definition, we would be. Hmmm, interesting!

Judy:
I don't say that God can not speak today Blaine, he can and he
does but ATST He does not change and He is not going to speak
anything alien or contrary to that which has already been written.
Jesus defeated the devil in the wilderness with "It is written" and
nothing has changed.  If 'it is written' you can take it to the Bank.
Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and He is The Life.  He is also The
Word of God and the volume is sealed.

I am just interested in knowing how some
Christians try to narrow their definition of 'Christian' to eliminate
those who have contrasting beliefs.

Blaine writes:
Well said.  This is a penetrating question, and  I would like a
response to it from other ttr's if possible.  I am sincere in asking
this.  Judy, DaveM, Laura, Izzy, Kevin, Dean, Ruben, anyone?
I am not trying to put anyone on the spot here, just want to hear
from a few of you on this subject-- I think it goes to the heart
of the matter rather succinctly.

Judy:
No problem Blaine and DaveH.  The plumbline or line of
agreement/separation is the Word of God.  We either gather around
it in fellowship or it separates us. Walking with God is impossible
when we will not agree with Him.

God Himself says through the prophet Isaiah "To the law and to the
testimony; if they speak not according to this word, it is because there
is no light in them" (Isaiah 8:20).

So this is how we know the called among us. One can outwardly
appear to be a lamb but as soon as they open their mouth their
cover is blown and they are immediately identified as a wolf by
those who have spiritual eyes to see and spiritual ears to hear.

Grace and Peace,
Judy

A Christian is one who has a relationship with Christ.  That means following Him, communicating with Him, learning from Him, following His teachings etc   - everything we would do with anyone we have the right relationship with.  That is kind of a simple definition but it works for me. Laura
