The problem here is not unlike a classroom where the teacher has been very 
lenient for most of the year and then tries to crack down with discipline to 
correct the problems.  There is outcry initially, but consistent application 
will work in the long run.

Yes, when TruthTalk first started, we used the rule right from the start and 
there was never a bunch of whiners about the rule.  Through the change of 
moderators along the way, different leadership styles which were more 
lenient took us away from any enforcement of the ad hominem rule.  Now, 
whenever it is brought up, people feel like their liberties are being 
threatened.  If there is consistent application of moderating the rule, I 
think it will benefit all of us.

Having said that, there will always be people who simply want to scream and 
malign others, and if the rule is enforced consistently, these people will 
probably leave the list because TruthTalk will not be a forum where they can 
vent their negative feelings toward others.
