Because there is an extra hour in the day to be critical, I caught the first hour of SNL, including the cold open with the McCains and Fey which wasn't bad. It was also freakishly similar to a sketch I recall from the Carson "Tonight Show." I'm almost positive I have it on VHS somewhere. I will try to dig it up, but I recall a Feingold/fine gold joke in a Home Shopping Club bit. Either way, McCain seemed relaxed, but not confident... more like he was starting to come down off of the campaign high.
Ben Affleck's history of supporting losers made me laugh, but "The View" was painful to watch. Affleck did do a decent send up of "Countdown" and its inane ability to take idle quotes or misspoken phrases and try to turn them into more than they are. The "Target" sketch brought back the pain. I don't know if it was referencing something specific, but it wasn't funny. Also unfunny... "Giraffes." There is probably more comedy from the giraffe Wikipedia entry (there couldn't be less). McCain's Update appearance wasn't nearly as smooth as the cold open. I'd make a joke about McCain staying up past his bedtime, but truthfully, it was during this segment where it seemed he realized both he and Palin's SNL appearances negated the campaign's earlier attempts to paint Obama as a celebrity. McCain joined the league of ordinary campaigners. I left SNL after Weekend Update, a few chuckles in the beginning, but it didn't take long before it digressed to the usual banality. One wonders why NBC doesn't slap some crappy reality show into SNL's timeslot and just give up the ghost. -- Kevin M.
