When David Letterman was interviewed by Ted Koppel for Nightline, he
said that he had Gore and Bush on as guests early in the campaign. He
later got a call from one of the campaigns, and he wouldn't say which
one, asking to have the candidate come back on, even to just do a
comedy sketch. Dave said he thought it wasn't appropriate and refused.

I remember watching the SNL McCain hosted and I thought he did a good
job. But he wasn't in a campaign for office when he did it. I'm
bothered that a candidate won't separate entertainment from the
campaign. Reagan managed it, and though I am no fan of his, I prefer
it that way.
