Thanks, Jeff, for your response.

And, no, my TV does not have knobs! I meant the items on the screen that have
to do with adjusting the color. I bought the set about a year ago.

I think your advice about the cables could be on the mark.

Two things happened as a result of my visit to the Sony website:

1. I learned that my set needs a software update. I was on hold for quite a
while before the customer service rep came back on the line to tell me that not
all TVs with my model number need the update, but according to my serial
number, mine does. The update with instructions is being sent to me. Now, how
that's gonna work, I don't know. I don't believe the TV has a USB port, but it
does have a connection for a computer (in the back, which is most
inconvenient), so I can just see having to use my netbook to do the trick.
Maybe. I'll also have to buy one of those cables to connect the computer to
the TV, which I was going to do anyway, but haven't done yet.

2. A response to my written description of the problem produced what sounds
like a form letter from "Harry":

Thank you for contacting Sony Support.

I'm sorry that the picture is not displayed on the TV screen with correct
color. Please follow the steps given below to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Make sure that you have connected the source to the Television properly and
securely.

2. Unplug the power cord of the unit from the wall outlet for few minutes, then
connect it to a different wall outlet and check the operation.

3. Connect the video source to a different input on the Television and check
the operation.

4. Connect a different video source to the Television and check the operation.

5. Replace the connecting cable and check the operation.

6. Reset the TV to factory settings. To reset your TV to factory settings, turn
the TV ON. Then, while pressing the UP arrow button on the remote control,
press the POWER button on the TV. The TV will turn itself OFF then back ON.

If the issue persists after following all the steps, service will be required.
You can find repair information and initiate the service at:

So, I will be following Harry's instructions in the near future, but probably
not until the software update arrives.

BTW, I agree with you about Sony products. Their reliability really doesn't
live up to their reputation. The only thing that I think Sony does better than
any other manufacturer is sound. I've yet to encounter better audio quality in
competing products.

Thanks again for your help.

Melissa, if your tv has knobs, it is old! lol You just need new
cables from your cable box to your set. I am assuming you are running
component video lines, and with those colors missing, i believe the
"B" line is the offending cable. Please do not waste a huge amount of
money on new cables. Bigger is not better...well, er, uh...in this
case anyway. A cable is a cable is a cable. Believe it or not, every
speaker on my 1500 watt surround sound system is nothing more than
cat5 computer cable, and you can hear the sound 2 blocks away...just
ask my brother.

If shopping for a new TV set, I agree avoiding the Sony is a good
idea. My personal recommendation is the Visio products. Affordable
and they work very well. On the cheaper side, Sanyo makes a very nice
product as well. In my mind, Mitsubishi has the superior video
quality, but they are very pricey. And hopefully it goes without
saying that video, just like audio, is all subjective. So buy what
you like and are comfortable with. Please avoid Mitsubishi DLP
products at all cost though. Total crap.
