Not to defend Colbert (whose show is never quite as good as I want it to 
be), but the two tapings I attended went pretty much live-to-air (meaning, 
no retakes or filler). The exception was in the second one, where he blew a 
joke in a bit with a blackboard and had to start over after erasing and 
redrawing on the board.

But, yeah, the cutaways to Batiste (who, like Paul Shaffer, really needs to 
shut up the off-screen comments) and the audience are pretty clear 
indicators of an edit. Some are less clumsy than others.
