Dave always felt strongly that his show should be as “live to tape” as
possible, though of course that did not count obviously and less obviously
pre-taped segments. One change when Colbert took over is that he clearly
does not have that same feeling. I think this is consistent with how he did
things on the CR, where I am pretty sure they routinely re-did what would
have been “live to tape” segements, often multiple times, and edited
together the best bits for the broadcast. Colbert has also, as we have
discussed here, been more comfortable using musical, interview and comedy
pieces recorded previously and blended in, and I suspect it is not uncommon
that he stops tape and re-shoots specific segments. I don’t know if it is
“sloppy” editing as much as a growing awareness that this kind of editing
happens routinely that leads to the sometimes jarring discontinuities -
with the host or bandleader wearing a different tie or suit.

All of that said, while I am not sure it qualifies as actual lying, I would
rather they cut out the “live to tape” thing, unless they find a way to
telegraph it more specifically as an homage to Sanders. I don’t like it
because it strongly implies that this version of the show is shot with more
direct continuity than Dave’s version, and that is clearly not so.
