While I agree with your fundamental premise of demonstrating better
tools, as long as there are people who will cry foul over the issue,
the definition of "level playing field" is unfortunately ambiguous and
ripe for complaint when tools are in the mix.

I'd LOVE to stand up U2 next to any SQL database in a real-world-type
scenario. Maybe we'd win, maybe we'd show, maybe we'd tank.
Regardless of the outcome, though, would that not be MOST useful
information?

Then again, if the requirements are such where multivalues would be
useful (yeah, like that COULDN'T happen in the real world?) we could
end up with a whole new class of complaints.

Personally, I'd love to see several different events, like maybe:

* A BASIC-only competition - compiler and editor only.
* A web solution - whatever it takes to deploy a specific web
scenario.
* A reporting solution - flexibility in getting information out.
* A freestyle competition (for anybody with any configuration)
* A business strategy competition.

I'm sure given enough thought this community could all come up with a
whole bunch of other events. More importantly, with such an extensive
competition I'm sure we could all learn a great deal to improve our
respective companies and careers.

Of course, then there's the issue of the prize. I'm sure Spectrum
won't want to be setting buckets of cash on fire with this thing, so
that's certain to be a concern. Frankly, I'd compete without a
payout, because - at least to me - the educational value is a lot more
valuable. What about you? Would you compete if there wasn't a
payout?
