For iRiver stuff, check out http://www.rockbox.org It's open-source replacement firmware for archos and iriver devices. On one of the pages they mention how to mount it in linux... as far as I can remember, most of the HD based players just have an ATA-USB bridge chip so you're basically just seeing the hard drive. Not sure if this is the case with all players though...
