As previously stated a gas generator is a bad idea, but not because of exhaust. When a boat is plugged into shore power all the a/c grounds and neutrals are separated for safety. When you throw the switch from shore to generator it combines the a/c grounds and neutrals for safety. If you use a gas generator and plug it into your shore power you will create the potential of electrocuting swimmers. The problem is even more severe in fresh water than salt water. If you want to know why fresh water is more dangerous than salt water look up "fresh water electrocution".
