David,
This new list supported by Jon Herman has nothing to do with bad traffic. When
Cassidy and the gang were given a "free pass" on the list, they could
intimidate anyone who questioned the Penn agenda. And they did.
When the ganging up and Cassidy's poor reading comprehension were exposed for
the fallacious strategies these are, the intimidation stopped being effective.
It makes sense that a brat like Cassidy would be chosen to pack up the marbles
and set up a private party.
Jon H, Andrew Z and Penn real estate know that the issues discussed on this
listserv are one of the biggest local threats to the dishonest Penn marketing
machine. I look at the potshots taken at me by the FOCP president and vice
president (not subscribed to the list) as examples of the power of the list and
the threat to those who demand secrecy as they abuse the neighborhood. We can't
get the front pages of the Inky and the Public Record like Penn can control.
The indignant self righteous of the new list will tell you that the "community"
people don't all have computers as another distraction. What they won't say is
that the list is one of the few communication mediums that is accessible to
members of the community and can not be controlled by Penn. Cassidy's barking
cheese will be controlled by Cassidy for Cassidy's and UCD fans.
Cassidy is trying to show us that people with the wrong ideas will be silenced.
This is exactly what the civic associations and UCD try to do. The community
will be handpicked and controlled.
I'd like to thank everyone who set up the list and had the commitment to open
communication. You did a great thing for the community and support real
democracy.. You did a better thing for this community than any civic
association has ever done.
By the way, Jon H works for one of those Penn driven marketing agencies. He is
a former colleague of Andrew Z who did not disclose his Penn real estate
connection in his good old boy opinion piece dissing West Philly protesters.
I'm glad that Penn has the Cassidy moderated list for the UCD culture.
All of their pot shots were distracting to a community discussion list. I hope
folks no longer feel intimidated when they wish to express themselves!
Glenn

Subject: Re: [UC] Listserve Reform of the UC list
I'm surprised this is such a big deal. And I'm not sure what constitutes
"bad traffic" other than outright spam. I've been reading this listserv for at
least the past 6 years, and i've never seen it as a problem. I set up a
separate email account for the lists I subscribe to so that my main account
doesn't get overwhelmed, and I use Gmail, which does a great job of threading
the conversations to make everything much easier to keep track of. When my
life gets too busy, I just don't read it for a while. If a topic gets posted
that I'm not interested in, I ignore it. If someone keeps being obnoxious on
the list, I ignore the emails from that person. If there's spam (and I really
haven't been aware of spam on this list), gmail automatically filters it into
my spam folder or I just delete it. Yes, there are posts which I don't like,
but so what? That's life, isn't! it?
I think it's really useful to have a single place where everyone can post.
Having multiple lists ultimately just waters everything down and makes it
harder for everyone to get a clear and complete picture of what's happening in
the neighborhood. Given that everyone who reads the list can simply delete or
ignore what they're not interested in means that there's no reason this list
can't be different things for different people. For some people it's an
opportunity to discuss local politics. For others, it's a place to announce
events. For others, it's a place to complain. I thought the idea was that
this was essentially an online community that reflected the opinions and
interests and needs of the physical community of West Philadelphia.

I'm tired of the bad traffic here on the listserve, and I know I'm not the

*Develop rules and guidelines (and allow moderation)
*Migrate to psfni
*start an alternate group
*Move to a BB like Phillyblog
*leave things as they are
