I like the idea of ready access to my music library, via something like
the SB, but I definitely don't want to leave a full PC on and running
24/7 (power usage and noise), nor do I want to have to boot it up when
I want to use it. I'm looking for either some sort of small, low-power
unit -- just CPU and hard drive really -- that is smart enough to spin
down the drive and maybe sleep the processor when not in use. Or,
failing that, at least be able to set up a regular mini-type computer
to do these things.
I would prefer that this server run Linux or some other open system
(Windows is definitely out), but when I've asked about power management
on desktop systems under Linux before, the only responses I've received
were to question my sanity. ("Why would you ever want to turn your
computer off?!") Is it possible to take advantage of the power
management features of desktop machines under Linux? And can anyone
suggest a good hardware unit on which to build a SlimServer (one that
will perform well and not require a lot of hoop-jumping)?
I did spend some time browsing and searching the forums here, and I see
some mentions of units like ReadyNAS, Buffalo, and Linksys NSLU, but the
reports have not generally been very positive (either too slow, or too
expensive, or closed system). What sort of specs should I be looking
for?
