Interesting thread, this. I was thinking about a similar setup for running slimserver, but then start getting distracted with other potential uses like "it'd be nice to have the box collect my email" and "hmmm, it could run NFS too".
I worry that loading a linkstation too much would mean it performs many functions, but none of them well :-/ The alternative of building a small mini-ITX box seems too power-hungry for my needs. I did look at the possibility of building something around a small embedded device such as a Soekris 4801 (www.soekris.com) or similar. System memory and price are always the limiting factors though.
