Hi, just my few comments on the subject. I am using an Asus Motherboard with a 2.8ghz athlon from AMD. The power supply is a noiseless 300w (great can't really hear it) It is in a 19" 32U rack unit which is getting quiet hot with 1DVD and 3 HDD. Had to add an extra fan for the HDD but the rest is noiseless and fairly efficient.
Attached i have another cases (with space of 10HDD) with 2 fans the same 300 Watt Powersupply (still noiseless). Right now it holds 3 300GB Segate drives and space to grow. Juding from the load on my UPS it is not consuing that much and it is rock solid.
