What I'm looking for is 1) RAID support. I want this to be my music and backup system; over time I might want to get to 800G of fault-tolerant storage.
2) spin down is essential. 3) lowish power and noise. I don't mind 30W peak. (My current music server is a dual processor with bunches of fans; several disks and it sounds like a jet revving for takeoff. Mercy knows what it's sucking down in terms of wattage, but I can't live with it.) 5) Fast enough to keep the SB remote fairly snappy. 6) I'd like to be able to edit the server's perl scripts, so I assume that means linux, not windows. 7) I can't be rebooting it every other Tuesday because Microsloth found another bug. I assume that means linux. 8) The disks have to be visible from Windows boxes, so I can back up to it and drag .flac files to it. FTP is not an option; I'll never get my family to mess with that. 9) It can be ugly as sin; it's going to live in a closet. No monitor, keyboard, CD, DVD or video. When I need a prompt I'll expect to telnet. I don't expect to spend bottom dollar for all that, but I have no idea what I can expect to spend. I've never bought linux boxes. What do I need to make slimserver happy? 1Ghz, 512MB? Less? More? What's good? Pointers appreciated. -- ScottMayo ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ScottMayo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3605 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18586 _______________________________________________ unix mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix
