You'll struggle to stay within 30w peak with 800G of RAID storage. Even
if you use 500Gb drives, 800GB is three drives.

No, you can run slimserver using ActiveState perl. It's pretty
straight-forward. This wiki page might be of use, especially if you want
to run a dev. version from svn:

Windows XP should be pretty stable and you don't have to install updates
if you're not directl;y connected to the net and don't use the machine
day in, day out for browsing.

XP Pro does that out of the box. Linux has Samba.

Use ssh. telnet is best disabled.

Buy as much RAM as you can throw at the box. 512MB is minimum for an XP
box. 1GB would work better.
