I went with Knoppmyth for a small media server. Bootable CD install, Debian based, easy peasy. From there, you can now use apt to install the Debian builds of slimserver. However, it is far from what I'd call low power, but it is compact. Antec Aria case, 1G RAM, Athlon XP200+, and 320G of drive space (so far)
