I'm not sure that "server edition of Ubuntu" = no GUI.  You might want
to check into that.  There shouldn't be anything to prevent you from
installing the KDE or GNOME desktop on it either.

If nobody responds here regarding your power management issues wrt to
the keyboard/mouse/monitor being disconnected, you should look in the
Ubuntu forums for an answer.  This issue isn't specific to the
squeezebox.

One of the advantages of using a popular Linix distro is that they have
a larger community to provide support.
