Looks to me that this is due to alsa-utils (which actually installs
quite a lot...). It only impacts alsa devices with volume controls, but
for the wandboard default analog output we get@
With alsa-utils installed and alsactl called startup (no config
though):

I am tempted to remove alsa-utils for the moment and perhaps include
some subset of amixer in squeezelite to adjust any hardware volume.
Does this seem sensible?
