Here is the result of my pseudo-scientific testing. As previously described, I originally tested with a Hifiberry installed in both PiA and PiB, but used the RCA out from the Hifiberry on the PiA and used the 3.5mm analogue out on the PiB. I couldn't tell the difference but did notice that the volume levels were different and suggested different audio paths were a factor. I have now removed the Hifiberry from PiB and repeated the test. The volume levels of PiA and PiB are now almost identical....and there is a definite difference in sound quality. I cannot claim that PiB sounds crackly and distorted, but it certainly has more clarity, separation and smoothness. But I have no idea why having the Hifiberry board connected or not-connected should make a difference to the audio coming out of the 3.5mm analogue output on the PiB, either in quality or level...... 3 Pis running piCoreplayer served by LMS on a Seagate Dockstar running Squeezeplug .
