I did a quick test, and I think this should be possible. With
squeezelite enabled and playing audio from LMS, I was able to issue:

aplay bump.wav

...and the sound effect played through the speaker. So there's hope.
I'll have to explore how sounds are played in squeezeplay and
re-enable/modify that part of the code.
