Ok, so I guess it's not just a matter of reinstating whatever was
disabled in Jivelite. I get the point about using the audio buffer.
Nevertheless, my quick-and-dirty experiment with aplay showed that it
was able to play a sound effect file regardless of whether squeezeplay
was using the default audo interface, and if squeezeplay was actually
playing audio at the time, then the sound effect was simply superimposed
over the top, without interrupting squeezeplay.

So I'd like to explore whether the Joggler implementation of Jivelite
could simply issue 'aplay' commands whenever an audio sound effect would
have been played in squeezeplay. Is this feasible do you think? Could
you point me to where such a command would need to be inserted, or has
all the relevant code been stripped out of Jivelite?

I don't know the first thing about aplay, but I imagine that output
volume can be incorporated into the play command line.
