You're a star! That's exactly what it was. I resized the pCP partition from (I think) 200MB to 2GB, re-installed LMS and re-scanned everything and it's working! Thanks so much for replying with that suggestion... For those who might be interested, the Pi 4 scanned 8000 MP3s (full initial scan) in about 7 minutes. It's super-fast and responsive in use.
