Hey thanks for your answer - it explains a lot!

I actually solved the stuttering shairport issues by changing the
wireless channel that was being used on my pi3 - I have a neighbor that
is using channel 3 right near to me quite extensively and channel 11 is
the busiest overall so it's been guess work to find a reliable channel
in between. It only takes one or two to ruin it for everyone! I did not
realize how almost 'realtime' shairport seems to function because I have
only ever used it next to the AP or over Ethernet years ago.... it must
be very susceptible to adjacent channel interference.

As for direct Bluetooth speaker mode, I had originally tried with
Ethernet to rule out WiFi interference from the beginning (plenty of
experience with this chip) and seeing now that the direct Bluetooth
speaker function is still only in development that explains a lot.
Thanks for getting back to me on that!

I have no use for the LMS portion of piCorePlayer - I have no
sophisticated home-audio setup - I just really liked the lightweight
aspect of pCP and thought it would be easy to set up a multi-purpose
wireless audio receiver with its interface. I used to use tiny core as a
main OS ten or so years ago too, so I really appreciate what's going on
behind the scenes as well.

Would you mind recommending another project that is similar to pCP that
would allow me to set both airplay and Bluetooth a2dp sink
concurrently?.. I have noticed Volumio, Moode and another that does not
come to mind right now. They all seem kind of wanting to be professional
commercial products so the quality is not so apparent from a noob's
perspective.

Honestly pCP really stuck out from the rest but I'm not sure I would
like to forgo Bluetooth - it would be really inconvenient.

thanks again for your help!
