OK now, this is going to bug me to no end if we can't get something going
here. I really take my Mac networking seriously. Alright now, here's my file
sharing setup via crossover cable:
Computers:
1) UMAX C600 - OS 9.2.2, RealTek 8139 PCI Ethernet Card
2) Powerbook G3/400 Pismo - OS X 10.1.5, Built-In Ethernet
My configuration is as follows:
1) C600/9.2.2:
AppleTalk
Connect via: ETHERNET
User Mode: ADVANCED
Address: AUTO
Options - Make AppleTalk: ACTIVE
TCP/IP
Connect via: ETHERNET
Configure: MANUALLY
IP Address: 10.0.1.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Options - Make TCP/IP: ACTIVE
File Sharing
Computer Name: Supermac
File Sharing: ON
Enable over TCP/IP: ON
Users:
network user: Seth M
Allow User to Connect to this computer: ON
Groups: MyMUG
Permissions on "/Documents/sethm" Folder:
Share this item and its contents: ON
Owner: Seth M - Read/Write
User/Group: MyMUG - Read
Everyone: none
2) Pismo/X 10.1.5 - username - Seth M, short name sethm:
Network:
Built In Ethernet
TCP/IP
Configure: MANUALLY
IP Address: 10.0.1.5
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
AppleTalk
Make AppleTalk Active: OFF
Sharing:
File & Web
File Sharing: ON
Computer Name: Pismo
IP Address: 10.0.1.5
Now here's my connection procedure:
1) From C600:
1. Go to "Chooser" select 'AppleShare'
2. Click 'Server IP Address...'
3. Enter: 10.0.1.5
4. Press [return]
5. Connect to file server "Pismo" as:
Registered User
Name: Seth M
Password: ********
Add Password to keychain: YES
Select the items you want to use:
sethm - OK
Volume is now on C600's desktop - all files visible.
2) From Pismo:
1. From "Finder" select "Go" then "Connect to Server [command - k]"
2. Select "Local Network" then 'Supermac' or enter "afp://10.0.1.3"
3. "Connect to the file server "Supermac" as:
Registered User
Name: Seth M
Password: ********
Options - Add password to keychain: YES
Select the items you want to use:
sethm - OK
Volume is now on Pismo desktop - all files visible.
Connected totally via AppleTalk Filing Protocol (AFP) running over TCP/IP.
It has worked exactly the same on the C600 when booting from OS 8.1, OS 9.1,
and OS 9.2.2 partitions.
*NOTE: Setting "AppleTalk" in the "Network Preferences" on OS X will allow
you to select the computer by its icon in the Chooser's "Select a file
server" panel on the OS 9 computer.
I really hope this helps. This has done me great service as a 'base-case'
when trying to troubleshoot a Mac network. I especially like the 'multiple
interface' features in OS X because I can still connect to the C600 via
ethernet while simultaneously connected to the internet via dialup. Two
totally separated networks, all while I am writing this message, yet all
done without a hub, switch, or router. Even though my IP Address is showing
up as 137.140.xx.xx in the Sharing preferences in OS X, file sharing via the
10.0.1.5 address still works flawlessly. In fact, I am downloading this
email in Entourage from an account stored in a folder on the C600. Just a
phone cord and a crossover cable, those guys over in Cupertino must be doing
something right.
HTH,
Seth
