Special thanks Seth,

Your instructions appear perfect in every detail. You
have saved me countless hours. Now my 7100 (OS 8.1) a
7500 and a 6100 (both OS 8.6) now accessing the 7300
(OS 101.4). I'll work on getting all the other Mac's
connected later. Just wanted to thank you and all the
others who have contributed to this thread.

On my pre-OS X network I did not use TCP/IP, except to
connect to my ISP's thus TCP/IP was either inactive or
not configured for Ethernet --it is now. On the OS X
side I just unchecked the "Make AppleTalk Active."

but it's worth a shot for diagnostic purposes and in
case you every decide to use any pre-8.1 OSs (I have a
lot of 68k Macs in my network :) ):

1. Open /Application/NetInfo Manager.app
2. In the column view at the top of the pages go to
the path: /config/AppleFileServer
3. In the panel of grayed out values below the column
view scroll down to 'use_appletalk'
4. Click the lock in the bottom left corner and punch
in your Admin password
5. Change the value for use_appletalk to '1'.
6. Close NetInfo Manager and confirm all saves and
updates.
7. Reboot>>

Also thanks Mark for info on the 68k machines. I do
have a IIci and SE/30 on the network as well. It is
not essential for them to have access to the 7300 but
it would be nice.

When following your directions I could not get the use
apple_talk value to be saved as 1. It would revert
back to 0 whenever I closed the NetInfo Manager's
window. How do I save this?

Best wishes --glen
