I also think this is a configuration problem. I am not experienced enough with all the networking stuff in OS X but I would have a look in Directory Setup from Utilities folder. Maybe you have configured NetInfo incorrectly. Try turning it off if it's on. It sounds to me that this machine expects a NetInfo server to authenticate the user. There is a log that might be useful to you: /Library/Logs/AppleFileService/AppleFileServiceAccess.log Another place to look is NetInfo Manager. I am sorry but I am not experienced enough to tell you exactly what to look for but you might get an idea.
