Lots of things. For example... [1] I have a network here with DOS/Unix/Windows/MacOS/OS X machines. If I could connect my printer to one of those, and OS X could use it, that's cheaper. [2] A router is no use if you have nothing to route. For example, you're not on broadband; or like me, with a UK broadband connection, which doesn't connect via Ethernet, only via a Windows-only USB modem. For Ethernet I'd have to pay OVER FIVE TIMES AS MUCH PER MONTH. [3] The cheapest broadband routers available in the UK cost around �250. That's about US$350-400. Phil is on the same list; that suggests that he's read your post. Because he's still asking, that suggests that he didn't understand it. So, it wasn't simple and clear enough from some people.
