Hi, I am new to both this list and the unsupported mac os X list (though
I am old with macs and other lowendmac lists). I was "sent away" from
the PCI PPC list with this problem/question: how to install panther on a
beige 233 G3 (revA rom, 4gb hd, 128mb ram, all the bare minimums. All I
need X for is my web server) I have downloaded and tried XPostFacto to
no avail. When it tries to install from the cd, upon startup, it
replaces the grey apple logo with an x (the kind of "x" in front of the
cigarette on no smoking signs, if you get what I'm saying ;) Anyhow, I
am stuck with OS9 on an external scsi 9.1gb drive. Any help?
I can't see this ever working. I think this system is too minimal for Panther. Jaguar might run really slow, and Puma even slower.
First, you need a Radeon card for Panther since the built-in Rage isn't supported, at least not directly upon installation. You can use Jaguar or Puma with the built-in.
Second, 128 MB RAM is little, it's below the fixed amount Panther needs. Even 256 MB would be minimal, and 384 MB barely adequate.
Third, 4 GB is probably too small. If you get the Radeon & memory, put OS 9 on the 4 GB and OS X on the 9.1 GB SCSI and you'll be happier. If you skip the Radeon, you'll still need the memory for Jaguar or Puma to have any speed at all.
Things to look at: is the CD really good? Have you booted it before? Also, does the 233 have the firmware update for the CD-ROM? Both these are problems that can stop the CD from booting.
Good luck! Kris Tilford
