When it tries to install from the cd, upon startup, it
replaces the grey apple logo with an x (the kind of "x" in front of the
cigarette on no smoking signs, if you get what I'm saying ;)  Anyhow, I
am stuck with OS9 on an external scsi 9.1gb drive.  Any help?

What is the drive formatted/partitioned with? You pretty much *have* to use Apple Drive Setup from OS 9. Not much else will work.
