E-mail/web hybrids already work fine at egroups.com.

The challenge is for subtle things, like getting articles and threads
classified according to the ways people use them in critical
discussions. Lorna Johnston, an M.Phil. student, came up with a model
of how to do that, based on her content analysis of both face-to-face
student seminars and ones on computer conferences.
