Hi Gene,

Thus the proper solution for a user is to make use of dictionary
extension only.

That answer totally ignores the fact that many of us ADD words to the standard dictionary for what ever reason. (I add unusual place and person names for my genealogy research and technical terms for my work.) Reloading any of the dictionaries wipes out all the "custom words" and I have to add them all over again. The purpose of back-ups is to save this extra work. So the question is still, how do I back up the standard dictionary so I can save my "custom" entries? If it is not possible, then it really should be added as a possibility.

Well, then it is the usual case of confusing to completely unrelated
topics, which are:
- dictionaries pre-installed and/or downloadable
and
- the user-dictionaries which can be editetd by the user via the UI

The 'standard' dictionary is one of the latter and thus what I have said
does not apply to it!
User dictionaries (the writable ones!) are locate in the user-layer of
the installation in the user/wordbook sub-directory. You can make
backups of those by simply copying them.

OOo 3.o does not give me the option to add a word to anything but the standard dictionary. There is no confusing of two unrelated topics. The question was and still is, how do you back up the standard dictionary so you can save the added words.

Never mind. I have found bits and pieces of the answer in different places and have pieced together what I believe is the answer to the OP's question.

standard.dic is the default USER dictionary that comes with OOo 3.0.

standard.dic is located in (on Win XP) C:\Documents and Settings\User_Name\Application Data\OpenOffice.org\3\user\wordbook.

Any user dictionaries added by the user are also located there. Added by Tools > Options > Language Settings > Writing Aids. They can also be edited there. (ie; correcting a mis-spelled word in the dictionary, deleting an erroneously entered word, etc.)

To back up these files simply copy them to your back up location. To restore,
copy them back.

Do not assume that what is clearly obvious to you is also common knowledge to the person asking the question. Some of us are not programmers or experts in the program and need a little extra information. ;-}
